The Number #1 Corporate Antispam Solution
 |
A corporate server can be bombarded with over a quarter of a million unsolicited emails in a single one week period.
Traditional anti spam solutions check for spam once the email has downloaded into the exchange system. Once downloaded a Bayesian search of known spam attributes is conducted which identifies suspicious email as spam and the file is labeled and stored to be dealt with at a later date. It is Australian Networking Engineers opinion that once problematic emails are accepted on to the system in the first place the system is at a much higher risk of malicious activity.

Apart from the sheer inconvenience of dealing with such a large number of files, very few people realize that unsolicited email files don't just occupy hard disc space but they also occupy bandwidth space! In other words you must also pay for the inconvenience of downloading spam and the more there is the more you pay. In addition to this it is suggested that it can take up to one minute of an employees time to deal with each spam message.
There are numerous Anti Spam solutions available on the market as with most automated solutions there are some generic disadvantages with all of them. They all require a degree of user management and they all at times block legitimate emails.
Australian networking engineers has spent considerable time assessing the effectiveness and costs of various spam filters available and has chosen a freeware solution called ASSP. The advantages we have identified with this program when configured correctly are
1.) It takes the fight against spam away from the server level and deals with it before it is downloaded. Blocking unsolicited email before it is downloaded onto the system mail exchange provides for a much cleaner and more stable exchange. You save money because you use less bandwidth and the system runs faster because it has less clutter to deal with. Other solutions usually download the spam into exchange before dealing with it.
2.) It has a delaying feature which most other offerings do not. Spammers generally operate by hitting an address and gauging response. When receipt of the email is delayed and so the response is delayed the spammer thinks that the address is invalid and moves on to the next hit on the list. This one feature blocks 70% of spam.
If the email is genuine the sending server will usually try again after a few moments and the email is then accepted. The down side of this function is that genuine email is no longer instant but will take four minutes to be received.
3.) It does not use a black list. Black lists are usually maintained by a third party and is reactive rather than proactive.. By the time the spammers address is on the black list the spammer has moved on and is using another address to send from. Black lists also require an annual maintenance subscription which only adds cost to already burgeoning IT budgets. Additionally we have had instances where a client has been targeted by spammers and used to relay from their address. The address is then added to the black list effectively disabling your ability to send email.
4.) Relatively low maintenance once initially set up.
No licenses per user to pay for. No ongoing subscriptions or fees.
5.) It has an autolearning capacity. Spammers are constantly changing their strategies in much the same way that the creators of virus programs are constantly changing their strategies. ASSP has the ability subject to (some minimal ongoing configuration) remain current.
6.) It uses a white list which is developed by identifying the company's mail contacts and adding to them to the list over time.

Disadvantages -
Out of office emails are not recommended.
Email is not received instantly as it is delayed for a few minutes to avoid spammers re-hitting your email address.
